Q: Should I have a Spouse Rider?

2011 May 4

No. Most spouse riders cease to exist when the primary insureds policy either expires, lapses or benefits are paid due to death.  This is why Dave does not recommend spouse riders as part of a family’s life insurance plan.  There is typically no cost savings and most plans still require that the spouse has to go through a medical exam and underwriting.  In the event of death or divorce the spouse really has no protection at a time when they need it most.
